Join A Committee
As one of a group of committed volunteers, you can make a great school happen.
Staten Island Community Charter School relies on committees of volunteers to do much of the school’s non-academic work. We prefer to keep each committee small, so it can act quickly when necessary; but broad in outlook, so it can give a variety of views a fair hearing. Prospective committee members with a useful skill, practical experience or a unique perspective are especially welcome.
We’re also interested in hearing from prospective trustees who believe in the ideas SICCS stands for and want to help us achieve the goals outlined in our charter.
SICCS’s four standing committees
Of the four standing committees of the SICCS Board of Trustees (‘the board’) profiled below, the executive committee is the only one on which only trustees may serve, as provided in the school’s bylaws.
The executive committee, which manages the operations of the board of trustees, consists of at least five members, including the chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer and secretary. Contact: Lorna Harris, lharris@si-ccs.org
The academic committee is made up of at least three trustees. The committee overseas assessment and performance measures and the maintenance of school records and public documents. It also approves the structure and process of staff evaluations and produces SICCS’s annual report. Contact: Ellen Icolari, eicolari@si-ccs.org
The finance and audit committee is comprised of the treasurer (who also serves as chairperson) and from one to three trustees, as well as the business manager, who serves ex-officio. The committee establishes fiscal policy; recommends to the board an annual budget; and also recommends an independent auditor to conduct annual audits of the school’s financial statements. Contact: Lorna Harris, lharris@si-ccs.org
The nominating committee is made up of at least three trustees. The committee is responsible for nominating prospective trustees and for ensuring those nominations enhance the board’s overall composition. Our goal is a board as broadly representative in expertise and background as we can make it. [Currently inactive.]
Three operating committees
The personnel committee screens and interviews prospective SICCS employees. Contact: Lorna Harris, lharris@si-ccs.org
The communications committee oversees the conception, design and execution of external communications; develops communications and marketing strategies; develops media placement and buying strategies; establishes, supports and monitors style and usage standards; establishes annual budget; negotiates media buys and hires creative talent on a per-project basis subject to board approval. Contact: Dan Icolari, dicolari@si-ccs.org
The fund-raising committee identifies and pursues prospective fund-raising opportunities among potential corporate, foundation, government and individual supporters.
