Staten Island Community Charter School is a community-based, community-focused, community-run K-8 public charter school on the North Shore of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City.
Our school is near the FREE Staten Island Ferry, SI Expressway to and from New Jersey, and Verrazano Narrows Bridge to and from Brooklyn. Two MTA bus lines stop nearby, and the parking is easy.

B. Role Description

TEACHER ASSISTANTS (K-8)
A. Specific grade level openings and function
- The teacher assistant will serve grades K-3 and will perform duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct services to students or parents.
- Serve in a position for which a teacher or another professional has ultimate responsibility for the design and implementation of educational programs and services.
B. Role Description
- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
- Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
- Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
- Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students.
- Distribute tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
- Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
- Organize and label materials, and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye levels and perceptual skills.
- Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems.

SOCIAL WORKER (K-8)
A. Purpose:
Assists students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with the educational process; Works with parents/guardians, teachers, school principal and community based resources; Implements strategies that promote students’ positive school adjustment; Responds to all discipline referrals during the school day.
B. Role Description
- Identifies and assesses academic problems through analysis of factors impinging on student adjustment including factors in the home, school, and community.
- Serves as a liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in educational planning for students by encouraging parent/guardian participation in the school setting.
- Completes psychosocial assessments to assist in the determination of special education services.
- Determines and implements appropriate therapeutic strategies to effect changes in behavioral–social interactions of students and their families.
- Provides individual and group therapeutic counseling to students and their families.
- Provides parent/guardian educational workshops on identified issues related to child development, stress reduction, discipline and safety, and teacher/parent/student communication.
- Collaborates with school staff in implementing strategies to promote student learning.Participate as members of the IEP, SST, and other school-based teams to develop interventions for promoting students’ academic success.

- MSW preferably in school social work.
- Minimum 5 years experience with elementary school children.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER (K-8)

To develop in each pupil K-3 an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.
B. Role Description
- Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the New York City Dept of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations.
- Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge’s, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the over-all safety of pupils.
- Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
- Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills and knowledge of team sports.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the NYCDOW and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Participates cooperatively with the principal to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with school guidelines.
- Selects and requisitions equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
