Staten Island Community Charter School is a community-based, community-focused, community-run K-8 public charter school on the North Shore of Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Our school is near the FREE Staten Island Ferry, SI Expressway to and from New Jersey, and Verrazano Narrows Bridge to and from Brooklyn. Two MTA bus lines stop nearby, and the parking is easy.

B.  Role Description

  1. Plan and execute daily, grade appropriate lessons for students following NYSED curriculum. 
  2. Create a warm, friendly and inviting learning environment for students. 
  3. Manage students appropriately and effectively to maintain safe and orderly school environment. 
  4. Administer required assessments. 
  5. Gather and analyze data to drive instructional program. 
  6. Collaborate with other members of the teaching staff. 
  7. Attend professional development during school year and specified dates during July and August. 
  8. Meet with supervisors as needed/required.
  9. Communicate effectively with parents to keep them informed about their children’s progress. 
  10. Comply with rules and regulations of NYSED and applicable rules and regulations of NYCDOE.    

C. Qualifications for the position

  1. Masters Degree in Education
  2. NYD Certification in Elementary (K-6) or Early Childhood (PreK-12) and/or Special Education (1-6).
  3. Experience in curriculum development, instructional strategies (differentiation) and assessment.
  4. Understanding of data-driven instruction.
  5. Established track record for raising test scores.
  6. Knowledge of NYS Common Core Standards.
  7. Familiarity with balanced literacy, numeracy, science and social studies.
  8. Minimum 3 years experience working with elementary school children.
  9. Charter school experience is a plus.
  10. Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  11. Excellent behavior management skills.
  12. Understanding of social and emotional learning.

TEACHER ASSISTANTS (K-8)

A.  Specific grade level openings and function

  1. The teacher assistant will serve grades K-3 and will perform duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct services to students or parents.
  2. Serve in a position for which a teacher or another professional has ultimate responsibility for the design and implementation of educational programs and services.

B.  Role Description

  1. Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers in order to coordinate instructional efforts.
  2. Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  3. Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups in order to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  4. Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
  5. Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils to students.
  6. Distribute tests and homework assignments, and collect them when they are completed.
  7. Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
  8. Organize and label materials, and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye levels and perceptual skills.
  9. Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
  10. Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or problems.
  11. Prepare lesson outlines and plans in assigned subject areas, and submit outlines to teachers for review.
  12. Take class attendance, and maintain attendance records.
  13. Assist in bus loading and unloading.
  14. Attend staff meetings, and serve on committees as required.
  15. Collect money from students for school-related projects.
  16. Laminate teaching materials to increase their durability under repeated use.
  17. Requisition and stock teaching materials and supplies.
  18. Type, file, and duplicate materials.
  19. Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.

C. Qualifications for the position

  1. Bacherlor’s degree preferred in education

SOCIAL WORKER (K-8)

A.  Purpose:

Assists students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with the educational process; Works with parents/guardians, teachers, school principal and community based resources; Implements strategies that promote students’ positive school adjustment; Responds to all discipline referrals during the school day.

B.  Role Description

  1. Identifies and assesses academic problems through analysis of factors impinging on student adjustment including factors in the home, school, and community.
  2. Serves as a liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in educational planning for students by encouraging parent/guardian participation in the school setting.
  3. Completes psychosocial assessments to assist in the determination of special education services.
  4. Determines and implements appropriate therapeutic strategies to effect changes in behavioral–social interactions of students and their families.
  5. Provides individual and group therapeutic counseling to students and their families.
  6. Provides parent/guardian educational workshops on identified issues related to child development, stress reduction, discipline and safety, and teacher/parent/student communication.
  7. Collaborates with school staff in implementing strategies to promote student learning.Participate as members of the IEP, SST, and other school-based teams to develop interventions for promoting students’ academic success.

  9. Serves on both school-based and system-wide committees to address educational issues, adjustment problems, safety issues, and program development for students.
  10. Provides crisis intervention services.
  11. Provides social work case management for students and families.

  13. Conducts staff development on issues related to social-emotional-environmental factors that impact learning.
  14. Develops programs to address parent/guardian participation in the school and student engagement in the educational process.
  15. Conducts classroom meetings, psycho-educational social skills groups, and classroom presentations on identified areas of concern for the students.
  16. Maintains required clinical records and submits appropriate documents for statistical reports with adherence to program standards in school social work.
  17. Conducts home visits related to establishing communication and positive connections between the parent/guardian and school setting around identified issues.
  18. Completes risk assessments on referred students.
  19. Completes functional behavior assessments on identified students.
  20. Completes classroom observations.
  21. Serves as liaison with community agencies and assists in fostering communication between schools, parents/guardians, and community leaders, and locates and mobilizes community resources to support the educational program.

C. Qualifications for the position:

  1. MSW preferably in school social work.
  2. Minimum 5 years experience with elementary school children.
  3. Experience in charter schools a plus.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  5. Superior conflict resolution skills
  6. Knowledge of social and emotional student learning.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER (K-8)

A.  Specific grade level openings and function

To develop in each pupil K-3 an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.

B.  Role Description

  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the New York City Dept of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations.
  3. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge’s, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  4. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  5. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the over-all safety of pupils.
  6. Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  8. Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills and knowledge of team sports.
  9. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the NYCDOW and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  10. Participates cooperatively with the principal to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with school guidelines.
  11. Selects and requisitions equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  12. Communicates with parents on pupil progress.
  13. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  14. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  15. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  16. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

C. Qualifications for the position

  1. Valid State Teacher Certification
  2. Bachelor’s Degree with major or minor in Physical Education
  3. Knowledge of NYS Common Core Standards.

DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION (K-8)

A.  School Function

Evaluate and provide leadership for the overall curriculum and instruction program; Responsible for the formal and informal assessments; Analyze and interpret all testing data; Provide for effective professional development for faculty and support staff; Knowledgeable about New York State Common Core Standards.

B.  Role Description

  1. Direct instructional and curriculum services to meet students’ needs.
  2. Plan, implement, and evaluate instructional programs with teachers and the principal, including learning objectives, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques.
  3. Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching-learning process.
  4. Work with appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on systematic review and analysis.
  5. Involve instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional materials to meet student learning needs.
  6. Ensure the use of technology in the teaching-learning process.
  7. Plan the necessary time, resources, and materials to support accomplishment of education goals.
  8. Participate in the school decision-making process to establish and review the school’s goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district.
  9. Actively support the efforts of others to achieve school goals and objectives.
  10. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to examine curriculum and instruction program effectiveness.
  11. Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources to assist the principal and teachers to attain objectives.
  12. Provide effective staff development activities that incorporate the mission of the school, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others.
  13. Responsible for textbook adoption, order and selection process.
  14. Administer the curriculum and instruction budget and ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.
  15. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  16. Assist with recruitment, selection, and training of personnel in the school.
  17. Capable of creating a master schedule as well as individual teacher schedules.
  18. Attend monthly Board meeting.

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

A.  School Function

Reporting to the Principal, work with the Principal, Board leadership and Parent Team to coordinate communications, documents, calendars and special projects.

B.  Role Description

  1. Prioritizes phone calls and responds to queries or fields to correct party
  2. Organizes informational, resource, personnel and departmental files
  3. Retrieves information upon request
  4. Prepares information packets for meetings and for correspondence
  5. Develops spreadsheets for data analysis
  6. Formats and prepares reports for various agencies in consultation with dean
  7. Gathers information as requested by me from outside sources
  8. Prepares payroll information
  9. Maintains attendance records
  10. Interfaces with community agency representatives and gathers information requested by staff
  11. Develops written materials, e.g., flyers and promotional materials
  12. Sets up appointments and coordinates schedules for planning events
  13. Interacts with all teachers, organizing work folders and materials needed for teaching
  14. Maintains records of meeting minutes and meeting handouts—all files clearly labeled and organized
  15. Produces large volume mailings
  16. Orders materials/supplies and prepares invoices
  17. Interacts with students, informing them of schedule changes
  18. Organizes materials for search committees and sets up interview appointments
  19. Completes applications and forms for the NYC Department of Education and other agencies re: credentialing

C. Qualifications for the position

  1. Bachelor’s degree. 
  2. Three years of professional administrative experience with executive level staff. 
  3. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  4. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Adobe Ilustrator, Photoshop and Access.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Technology and software proficiency.
